Patricia,
Native peoples’ legal right to housing is under attack.
President Trump’s FY2027 budget proposal would eliminate Native housing assistance programs such as Native American CDFI Assistance after already freezing tens of millions of dollars in funding previously authorized by Congress.
But now, a bipartisan bill has been introduced in the House and Senate that would reauthorize and modernize the Native American Housing Assistance and Self-Determinization Act of 1996, the primary federal law providing funding to support affordable housing in Indian Country, including funding the Indian Housing Block Grant program.
In the face of attacks on Native housing by the Trump administration, this bipartisan legislation is a critical opportunity to protect and improve structures that defend our legal right to housing.
Send an urgent message to Congress to pass the Native American Housing and Self-Determinization Modernization Act now.
SIGN AND SENDHere’s what several of the bill’s co-sponsors said:
“Reauthorizing and updating this legislation will strengthen self-determination, expand access to housing, and provide Tribes with the flexibility and resources needed to address local needs.” - Sen. Ben Ray Luján (D-NM)
“As Congress continues its efforts to address housing challenges around the country, we cannot leave Native communities behind. The federal government has a trust responsibility to ensure Tribes have the tools to meet the housing needs of their people.” - Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK)
“Montana is home to seven Indian Reservations, and it’s one of my top priorities to ensure that these communities have equal access and resources, including when it comes to housing.” - Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT)
Take action now and urge Congress to immediately take up and pass the Native American Housing and Self-Determinization Modernization Act.
Hawwih (
thank you) for taking action today to defend our treaty rights and our constitutional right to sovereignty.
