Jesus Cantu Medel posed for a photograph outside his home, where he operates the Museo Guadalue Aztlan, on Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021, in Houston. Medel, 72, is a third-generation Houstonian who's dedicated his life to the preservation and promotion of Indigenous and Chicano arts and culture, especially as they pertain to southeast Texas. He started the Museo Guadalupe Aztlan in 1994 as a "museum-on-wheels" operated out of his Northside home with pop-ups at whatever institution will give him space, putting together annual film screenings, lectures, oral histories and celebrations dedicated to indigenous and Chicano cultures.
