Patricia,
Congressional Republicans and the Trump administration have sent ICE into communities in a spirit of lawlessness and disdain for human rights which translates into racial profiling.
Now they’re trying to super-charge ICE violence through a budget that would hand ICE and Border Patrol another $70 billion on top of the massive slush fund they received last year as part of Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill.
Trump’s border czar Tom Homan has said, “mass deportations are coming.” And, we know that Native peoples have been harassed, racially profiled, and detained by ICE.
In response, lawmakers introduced a bipartisan bill in the U.S. House and Senate that would require federal agents to respect Tribal sovereignty, including Tribal documentation.
The bill’s lead author in the House and member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, Rep. Sharice Davids (D-KS) said:
“Lately, we’ve seen troubling reports of Native Americans being questioned or detained because federal officers lacked the training needed to recognize tribal documentation or understand Tribal Nation citizenship. This bipartisan bill is about preventing those failures, improving training and accountability, and making sure all people are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.”
Take action today! Click here to send a message to your U.S. Representative and Senators urging them to co-sponsor and pass the Respect Tribal IDs Act and protect Native peoples from ICE violence and detainment.
SIGN AND SENDNative News Online correctly stated, “The bill comes amid increasing reports that Native Americans have been stopped, questioned, or detained after federal officers failed to recognize valid tribal IDs as proof of U.S. citizenship.”
The Respect Tribal IDs Act would require the Department of Homeland Security to coordinate with the Bureau of Indian Affairs, as well as Tribal Nations, to develop a standardized training for federal officers involved in immigration raids, including how to identify Tribal documents and Tribal IDs as proof of citizenship, and develop proper protocols for interacting with Tribal members.
Republican co-sponsor Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) said:
“Federal agencies have a responsibility to protect and support Tribal citizens, and this legislation helps ensure they do that.”
Demand Congress act to defend Tribal sovereignty and protect the rights of Native peoples. Send a message demanding your Representative and Senators co-sponsor and pass the bipartisan Respect Tribal IDs Act now.
Hawwih (thank you) for taking action to hold ICE accountable,
Judith LeBlanc (Caddo)
