Amazing New Books By & About Latinos Are Being Honored at the 26th International Latino Book Awards

By Kirk Whisler

The 26th annual International Latino Book Awards was held on October 19, 2024, on the campus of Los Angeles City College before the largest gathering of Latino authors in the USA this year. This year’s award ceremony celebrated MAJOR established Latino authors like Julia Alvarez, Paulo Coehlo, Marie Arana, Isabel Campoy, and Mararita Engle; Celebrity authors like Chita Rivera, Luis Miranda Jr, Pepe Serna, Andrea Navedo, and Aida Rodriguez; and Rising Star authors that we should all be watching like Alejandra Campoverdi, Nana Cóndor, Adriana Devers, Rocky Barilla, Roberto de Haro, Isabel Millan, Johanna Rojas, Ariadna Sánchez Hernández, Laura Tarragó and so many other rapidly developing authors. With key screenwriters like Nancy de los Santos and Rick Najera present there was an undercurrent of anticipation over the upcoming film rights auction over one of the night’s big winners, Love in War. It’s an exciting time to be in Latino publishing! The 2024 Rising Stars are Adriana Devers for Children’s Books; Rocky Barilla for Fiction; Alejandra Campoverdi and Isabel Millán for NonFiction; and Ariadna Sanchez Hernandez for Poetry.

This year’s Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medal winners in 105 categories of Children and Young Adult Books, Fiction, NonFiction, and Poetry offer books for every age and reading desire. Special award categories are named after Alma Flor Ada, Isabel Allende, Rudolfo Anaya, Charlie Eriksen, Juan Felipe Herrera, Dolores Huerta, Hank Lacayo, Mimi Lozano, Ambassador Julian Nava, Luis Valdez, Victor Villasenñor, Raul Yzaguirre, now Nora de Hoyos Comstock.     Three key ways the marketplace for books for, by, and about Latinos is evolving:

     1.  QUALITY INCREASING. Over the last three decades, we’ve seen the field of Latino books grow from a few books in most key book categories to where today there’s a growing wide variety of books in most categories. With that growth has come awareness across the book industry that books by and about Latinos are a viable industry.

    2.  15 MILLION LATINO READERS.  A further sign is that there is now a consistent audience for books in both Spanish and English with a sizeable audience of 15.5 million Latino Readers across the United States. These consistent readers represent 34 percent of all Latino adults and have a combined income of $452 billion. The National Latino Reader Study’s nationwide survey of 10,640 found that these readers purchase an average of 24.7 books a year, with 42 percent of the books in Spanish, a major increase from a few decades ago when it was much harder to find a wide variety of books in Spanish in the United States.

    3.  THE AWARD GROWS. This year we had more books in English, Spanish, and Portuguese than ever before. Empowering Latino Futures received a 38% increase in entries over the previous record high. This is another sign of the GREAT quality of books for, by, and about Latinos that are being produced. This year’s 239 judges were a tremendous help in this process: Past ILBA winners, professors, librarians, educators, journalists, members of REFORMA and Las Comadres, and people who love and appreciate good books were busy reviewing all the entries.

Since its founding in 1997 Empowering Latino Futures has held 75 Latino Book & Family Festivals around the USA with our Latino Book & Family Festivals; Honored over 3,000 books with the Int'l Latino Book Awards; provided 245,000 books to underserved youth with Education Begins in the Home, which started in 2015; Served 182,500 youth with our National Latino & American Indian Scholarship Directory; and our Latino Books into Movies Awards that has honored 199 books and scripts.

This year’s partners include AARP California, Amazon Literary Partnership, Google Transformation Tech, Hudson Pacific Properties, Independent Book Publishers Association, Lantia, Las Comadres, Los Angeles City College, Los Angeles Community College District, MAAC, MiraCosta College, Molina Healthcare, Sacramento City College, Sacramento Progressive Communities, San Diego County, and TrueCare.

The 2024 Rising Stars are Adriana Devers para Children’s Books; Rocky Barilla para Fiction; Alejandra Campoverdi and Isabel Millán para NonFiction; and Ariadna Sanchez Hernandez para Poetry.
