Native Organizers Alliance - Tell Congress it is time to tax the rich and make life more affordable for everyone.

Patricia,

Tomorrow is the deadline for submitting income tax returns to the Internal Revenue Service and every year millions of people pay taxes which support the needs of all of our communities across the country.

Elders, teachers, nurses, construction workers, small business owners, and families across the country pay taxes out of every paycheck. Those dollars help fund roads, hospitals, disaster response, and programs that help society function.

One of the racist stereotypes about Native people is that we don’t pay taxes. The irony is not only do we pay taxes, those taxes help pay for the government to implement our treaties. Those treaties were the result of years of hard fought negotiations and wars that often included land grabs and massacres of Native people.

But the ultra-rich -- millionaires and billionaires -- play by a completely different set of rules and have benefits that are rooted in colonial land and resource theft.

They’ve spent decades lobbying Congress to create special loopholes, carve-outs, and tax breaks that often allow them to avoid even paying any taxes at all. As billionaire wealth has soared into the trillions, our treaty rights are not fulfilled, and working families are struggling with rising housing costs, expensive healthcare, unaffordable childcare, and wages that have not kept up.

Now we’ve partnered up with allies to send tens of thousands of messages to Congress demanding what common sense and basic justice require: make the rich pay their taxes.

Everyone on Turtle Island should pay what they owe, especially those who can afford to do it the most. Send a message to Congress: Close the loopholes and build an economy that meets the needs of our communities and funds our treaty rights.

The demands are simple and fair.

We must close loopholes that let billionaires and ultra-wealthy elites off the hook and strengthen IRS enforcement to catch them when they cheat.

We must end corporate tax breaks that let multi-million dollar companies pay little or even nothing in federal taxes.

And we must invest the revenue raised into our communities, our people and the programs that make our neighbors and communities able to live a good life. Investment into climate repair, healthcare, infrastructure, broadband, childcare, Medicaid, SNAP and so much more that prepares Turtle Island for generations to come.

As a united people, Native and non-Native alike, we should honor a basic principle: everyone needs to contribute to supporting democratic ways to meet the needs of our communities. It's time to tax the rich. It is time for Congress to respect human rights and the rights of the natural world, and to force the wealthy to pay what they owe. This is how we make life sustainable for everyone now -- and for the next generations..

Please send your message now.
