Patricia,
Healthcare is a treaty right. It is also a human right for all. And yet, last week, Senate Republicans voted to reject a renewal of Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits that have been keeping healthcare more affordable for tens of millions of working families. But this fight is not over.
On Friday, House Republicans released their own healthcare plan, which they plan to vote on this Wednesday. But, instead of lowering the cost of out-of-pocket healthcare premiums, the Republican plan tinkers around the edges of the healthcare crisis without addressing the approaching January 1st healthcare cliff when tens of millions of people will see their monthly out-of-pocket premiums skyrocket.
Democrats have introduced a simple renewal of the tax credits that have resulted in record health insurance sign-ups through the ACA healthcare marketplace. But if these tax credits aren't renewed, tens of millions of people will see their monthly premiums more than double, while millions will lose their health insurance altogether.
Families work hard everyday and too many employers do not provide healthcare coverage. The reality in Indian Country is the majority of funding for Indian Health Services comes from Medicaid, Medicare and the ACA! We must act together.
Send a message to your U.S. Representative demanding Congress renew enhanced ACA subsidies now, before it's too late.
TAKE ACTIONWhen Republicans passed their Big Ugly Bill, they not only failed to renew the ACA premium tax credits -- they also cut nearly $1 trillion from Medicaid to pay for tax breaks for billionaires. Two thirds of Indian healthcare is covered by Medicaid, Medicare, and the ACA. But the federal government has never fully lived up to its treaty obligations.
On the heels of the largest-ever cut to Medicaid (which 60% of Native children and 2 out of every 5 elders rely on), congressional Republicans are now allowing a massive spike in healthcare costs starting January 1st. We’re demanding action!
Send a message to your U.S. Representative now demanding a clean vote on extending ACA premium tax credits to keep healthcare accessible to tens of millions of people.
Hawwih (thank you) for taking action today,
Judith LeBlanc (Caddo)
