Dear MACRI Friend,

On this Giving Tuesday, we’re reminded of a powerful truth: less than 2% of philanthropic dollars in the United States go to Latino-led nonprofits. That means the stories, contributions, and hard-won victories of our communities too often go underfunded—and, as a result, our history risks being lost.

At the Mexican American Civil Rights Institute, we know that history is not just about the past. Understanding our civil rights legacy gives us the tools to meet the challenges of our own time. When we learn how Mexican Americans have shaped—and continue to shape—the ongoing quest for justice, equality, and democracy, we gain strength, confidence, and inspiration for whatever lies ahead.

And there is so much to be proud of!

For generations, Mexican Americans have overcome barriers, built coalitions, and pushed our nation closer to its promise. Our stories are courageous, visionary, and deeply American. We are part of the fabric of this nation’s civil rights history—and we will continue to lead the way toward a more perfect union.

William “Willie” Merriweather Peña (1919-2018) was perhaps the most important Mexican American architect of the 20th century, yet he remains largely unknown outside of the architecture field. Learn more about this remarkable trailblazer with MACRI!
