This week, just one day after hundreds of immigrant youth and the children of immigrants mobilized to Washington, D.C., to mark the 14th anniversary of DACA, I learned that TIME named me to its inaugural Visionaries list, recognizing leaders across the country who are shaping a better future for young people.
I receive this recognition with gratitude, but never alone. From student walkouts to hunger strikes, immigrant youth have always been the visionaries taking bold action to build a future where everyone lives freely, safely, and with dignity.
If you believe in the power of immigrant youth to shape this country’s future, will you chip in $14 to United We Dream today—one dollar for every year of DACA?
Growing up as a young, queer immigrant in Texas, I knew what it was like to be isolated physically, politically, and economically from the fabric of our country. I joined this movement because I believed our lives mattered. Two decades later, I remain because I know immigration is one of the places our collective future will be decided.
The question has never simply been about who gets to come or who gets to stay. It is: Who gets to belong, to build wealth, and to shape our economy? Who gets to govern? Who gets to dream?
Working people should have more power. Democracy must live in our workplaces and neighborhoods. Those who create this country’s wealth must have a voice in how it’s shared, and immigrant communities are essential to that vision.
The members, organizers, and staff of United We Dream taught me that freedom is a practice. It is built whenever we organize to transform fear into power and isolation into solidarity. This recognition reflects what is possible when people decide they are worthy of governing the future they envision.
Courage is collective, hope is disciplined, and the future is built by people like you and the 1.2 million members of United We Dream who refuse to live in the shadows. Chip in $14 today to keep our movement strong.
