Native Organizers Alliance - Demand Congress protect housing, Two-Spirit people, and treaty rights.

Patricia,

The irony of the president’s proposed budget -- sending more money for war while gutting programs that fulfill treaty and human rights -- is not lost on Tribal and Native communities. The government’s use of war and military action has a long history in Indian Country and now in streets across the country.

If Congress were to adopt his presidential wishlist of cuts, hundreds of thousands of households could be evicted, with a laser focus on Two-Spirit people through proposed rules that would especially   discriminate against Two-Spirit and gender-expansive people and their families.

Most of you probably have not heard what is happening behind the scenes of the struggle to cut programs through the budget process and rule changes. We are calling on you to stand with us to raise awareness and take action on behalf of Two-Spirit families.

This is how we honor Pride Month right now, by speaking up for our transgender and Two-Spirit kin as we protect treaty rights and the human right to housing for all.

Please send a quick message today to demand Congress fully fund housing programs and protect people who are unhoused or at risk of homelessness -- including our Two-Spirit relatives.

SIGN AND SEND MESSAGE

Even though the federal government is legally obligated to uphold Tribes’ treaty rights, such as providing funding for housing, Native people on Turtle Island are more likely to experience houselessness than any other group.[1]

Trump’s 2027 budget proposes eliminating programs such as the Continuum of Care, which keeps people in permanent housing after they have experienced houselessness.

The budget also proposes cutting all funding for the Community Development Block Grant program, which supports Native and Tribal housing, and the Native American CDFI (Community Development Financial Institutions) Assistance program.

Congress doesn’t always follow the president’s proposed budget, but it’s on us to act now like our big beautiful grassroots movement did last year, which pushed Congress to reject Trump’s proposed cuts for Native-specific programs.

We also need Congress to stop the president’s Department of Housing and Urban Development’s (HUD) proposed attacks on the life-saving Equal Access Rule -- in an attempt to block trans and Two-Spirit people from accessing HUD-funded housing resources, such as homeless shelters that match their gender identity.

Please urge your Members of Congress to reject Trump’s proposed cuts to housing programs and protect gender-expansive people’s access to housing.

Hawwih ("thank you" in Caddo) for taking action today.

We’ll keep sending updates about other ways to take action and protect access to housing, treaty rights, and Two-Spirit people’s rights.

Judith LeBlanc (Caddo)
Executive Director
