Patricia,
In 1994, the Brave Heart Society (BHS), a traditional Dakota women’s society was formed by grandmothers, Unci in Dakota on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota. The Unci give direction to restoring traditional practices to uplift the values and ceremonies of the Lakota, Nakota and Dakota peoples.
At Native Organizers Alliance, we are honored to walk beside the Unci and share our resources. We also participate in this work to ground ourselves and NOA’s initiatives in community-driven experience.
This week, I’m joining them in a 4-day field school which studies the traditional science and practices of caring for the Missouri River, Mni Sose and restoring the ecological balance to the land with traditional burns for protection of the forest and restoring buffalo herds as a vital connection for healthy land and soil. Learning how our ancestors managed natural resources in traditional cultural lifeways prepares participants to weave our ancestors knowledge with science for the good of Mother Earth and to relearn our rightful role in natural creation.
We’re able to do this critical work because of funding from you and our allies. That’s why I have to ask you for your support again. Will you contribute $5 or whatever you can afford now?
This isn’t just any training. The Brave Heart Society Field School, which NOA has sponsored since its beginning, is a powerful experience that prepares for a career in the fields of environmental science, ecology, range and buffalo management, fisheries, anthropology, and archaeology.

It’s also fun and creates enduring relationships for the struggles to protect Mother Earth.

Together, we’re not just teaching each other, we’re learning, engaging, and understanding our role as a caretaker of the land, water, and the natural world of the Ohanktowan territory and strengthening the Yankton Nation. Please donate what you can to deliver the resources needed to continue this important work.
