Yes, Nativo brings up a theme of many important discussions about "Hispanic" history on this list Š.  And I certainly did not mean to write in favor of teaching about "Spanish explorers" as a major topic in

Latino / Chicana histories.   But Perez made a good point in comparing

Black History Month (& Women's History Month) to what is done by media and organizations around "Hispanic Heritage"  (a name change would be a good beginning !)

And I am also reminded by Perez's article of the bronze statues in front of Albuquerque History Museum and in front of the Texas state capitol Š very similar "takes" on

The settlers and "conquistador" leaders.   Even though of course, most of

those settlers were mestizo Mexicanos (with some cities like my adopted Las Vegas NM having been Established in 1822 -- after Mexican independence, and thus not "Hispanic"

at all !!)Š.

So the "Spanish Heritage" does contrast with "Anglo-Saxon pilgrims & Jamestown" versions -- but shares the huge omissions of a comparative history of genocide that Nativo outlines Š

[ FOOTNOTE:  When shopping in Santa Fe, talked with a Pueblo pottery maker and repeated his name with Spanish accent:  He said "No" and said his name again in English manner & told me about the enslavement of pueblo peoples by the

Spaniards Š.     Of course either pronunciation cannot escape using the

languages of "dispojo" Š
