The Trans-Border Institute invites you to a public forum:
What Does Immigration Reform Mean?
Tuesday, October 7, 2014
6-8:00 p.m.
Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theater
Hope is waning for the passage of sensible, bi-partisan
immigration reform. Like President Bush
before him, President Obama came into office promising a more rational and
secure system, and one that provided humane options for undocumented immigrants
who’ve been here for years or even decades.
Instead, our immigration policy has veered wildly from harsh enforcement
measures to ad hoc humanitarian gestures.
Meanwhile, the policy debate has often devolved into a shouting match,
where extremists crowd out more reasonable voices and demonize efforts at
compromise or incremental change. We can
do better. A lively discussion of what immigration
reform means from leaders in the legal, academic, business, and law enforcement
communities should be an excellent place to start.
The format for the public forum will be a panel
discussion, followed by Q & A with the audience.
Panelists:
Everard Meade, PhD, Director Trans-Border Institute,
University of San Diego
Paola Ávila, Director, Mexico Business Center, San Diego
Regional Chamber of Commerce
David Shirk, PhD, Associate Professor of Political
Science and Director of the Justice IN Mexico Project, University of San Diego
Gabe Pacheco, Spokesman, National Border Patrol Union,
Local 1613
Enrique Morones, Executive Director & founder, Border
Angels
