LULAC STANDS IN SOLIDARITY WITH NATIONAL DAY OF SILENCE, CALLS FOR UNITY, DIGNITY, AND RESPECT FOR LGBTQIA+

Nation's oldest and largest Latino civil rights organization says America's voters have the power to create a more inclusive, compassionate, and equitable society.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) today joins with a 30-year observance honoring the voices of LGBTQIA+ individuals by demonstrating the impact of their silencing. First organized in 1996 by students seeking to confront harassment and discrimination in schools, the Day of Silence has grown into a powerful national milestone. This event serves as both a moment of reflection and a call to action at a time when LGBTQIA+ Americans face increasing hostility, exclusion, and systemic challenges across multiple sectors of society.

"Silence, in this case, is an intentional statement of solidarity," said Javier "JC" CantĂș, chair of the LULAC National LGBTQIA+ Committee. "As our committee joins the Day of Silence, we do so to show what it feels like to be ignored, dismissed, or erased. Our committee reflects a range of lived experiences and perspectives because that is what it takes to build inclusive movements and systems that last. We are committed to ensuring that LGBTQIA+ Latinos and all LGBTQIA+ Americans are seen, heard, respected, and protected, and that our communities remain organized, engaged, and moving this work forward with purpose."

LULAC believes the challenges facing LGBTQIA+ individuals today are not abstract policy debates but deeply human issues affecting families, workplaces, schools, faith communities, and even those who serve in the nation's military. The erosion of protections and the rise of divisive rhetoric are creating real harm and widening fractures across American society.

"This is not about politics, it is about people," said Roman Palomares, LULAC National President and Chairman of the Board. "At our core, we believe in the dignity and worth of every human being. When any group is diminished, we are all diminished. LULAC stands firmly for the principle that every person has the right to live openly, safely, and with respect. That is the America we believe in, and that is the America we will continue to fight for."

LULAC encourages its members, partners, and communities across the country to participate in the Day of Silence as a meaningful act of solidarity and reflection. For more information and to register to participate in the National Day of Silence, individuals can access resources through the official Day of Silence platform.
