Native Organizers Alliance - SNAP provides the means for kids to live without hunger

Patricia,

Restoring food security for families across Turtle Island starts with ensuring that every child and every caregiver has the nourishment they need to live, learn, love, and grow.

One million Native peoples -- which accounts for 24% of all Native households -- rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). And, nationwide, 42 million people rely on SNAP, including 16 million children, 8 million elders, and 4 million people with disabilities.

Food security is the difference between a child arriving at school ready to learn or falling behind because being hungry makes it difficult to focus. It means parents' wages aren’t enough to feed their families so they depend on SNAP to insure their kids are not going without.

For the laid off and unemployed and millions of families earning low wages, food is already scarce -- and the GOP’s Big Brutal Budget made a bad situation even worse. When they passed their budget last summer, Republicans slashed $187 billion from SNAP, the largest cut in the program’s history. These are the benefits that help parents keep their children fed and fight the cycle of hunger.

Nutrition is a treaty right. It’s also a human right. Send a direct message demanding your members of Congress pass the Restoring Food Security for American Families and Farmers Act and reverse the devastating cuts to SNAP benefits now.

The GOP’s new rules add strict time limits and complicated paperwork requirements that cut off benefits for veterans, older adults, people with disabilities, and families with older children if they can’t constantly prove their work hours.

When these benefits disappear, it’s children and the elders who bear the deepest cost. This is the consequence of policies that puts greed first.

But Congress now has a real chance to undo the harm. The Restoring Food Security for American Families and Farmers Act would reverse the Republican cuts and protect the lifeline that keeps millions of families fed every single day -- and it even has some bipartisan support.

SNAP isn’t just the country’s most effective anti-hunger program -- it’s one of our strongest tools to lift children out of poverty, improve health outcomes, and build more stable families and communities.

These dollars are essential for guaranteeing food security for every family. Send a message to Congress and demand they reverse the cuts to SNAP now.

Hawwih (thank you) for standing up for those in need of this critical support.
