We will be coming together on Saturday August
9th @ 7pm at the T. Don Hutto Detention Center in Taylor, TX
(the site of the last family detention center in
the state of Texas) to protest the return of family
detention. More information is outlined below and is also available on
the Facebook event and Grassroots
Leadership Website.
The Obama Administration has responded to Central American refugees who have asked for asylum at the southern border by bringing back the practice of immigrant family detention. We have fought against family detention in Texas before — and won.
It's time to fight again. One facility has already been opened in Artesia, New Mexico, and reports are emerging that conditions are dangerous and unhealthy inside the family detention center that was created almost overnight at a Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC). Others have expressed concerns that procedures within the detention center present a threat to due process that could result in women and children who have sought refuge at the U.S.-Mexico border being sent back into harm's way. And in Karnes City, Texas, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has already begun to prepare a for-profit private prison run by the GEO Group to begin holding families with children in the coming weeks.
